Blackberry Mojitos are light, refreshing, and the perfect way to use the blackberries and mint that are in season right now.

I started out with the best of intentions. No really. I did. When I first saw blackberries at the store for $1.99 each (the carton, not per berry), I knew I had to make something with them. Truth be told, I’d been craving some lemonade for a few weeks and I thought I would turn that craving into some sort of blackberry lemonade recipe.

So, I got home from the store and got right to work. Attempt #1: fail. Too many blackberry seeds. Attempt #2: fail. Too much sour, not enough sweet. And in standard Goldilocks fashion, attempt  #3 was just right…because I stopped messing around and reverted to the alcohol and friends, that’s when this stuff got reallllll good.

So, I thought I’d be bringing you a spritzer of sorts when in fact; I’m bring you a blackberry mojito. YOU ARE WELCOME!

Plus, it’s Friday. Who really wanted a non-alcoholic beverage anyways?! If you’re pregnant or don’t drink, you could totally make this recipe and simply omit the rum for a blackberry (non-alcoholic) mojito spritzer of sorts. So do that instead. And maybe that’s where this recipe would have ended up if I didn’t get so darn frustrated and grab for the booze.

Blackberry Mojitos are light, refreshing, and the perfect way to use blackberries that are in season right now. Did I mention, they’re purple? How fun! The husband loved these mojitos and agreed these are even better than the classic!

There’s a just a little preparation with these babies (about 5 minutes) and you’ll be sipping a Blackberry Mojito before you know it!

Start by making the simple syrup. Combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup sugar in a saucepan. Add 8-12 washed mint leaves. Bring to a simmer, reduce until all of the sugar has melted and you’ve got mint simple syrup. Delicious! As a side note, I hear mint simple syrup makes for a delicious coffee if you’ve got leftovers!

Add a 6 oz container of washed blackberries to a mixing bowl. Add 2 tbsp of water and use a muddler to mash them. You could totally add them to the mojitos like this, but I really prefer a smooth drink (goes down easier, ya know) so I strain this liquid and push as much of the pulp as possible through the mesh colander into a small bowl.

Time to make the mojitos! Add the juice of one lime to a shaker with a few mint leaves. Muddle. Add 1 part blackberry juice, 1 part white rum (I used Cruzan), and ½ part of the mint simple syrup. Shake with ice and pour in a cocktail glass. Top with a few ounces of club soda for a little spritz.

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Yield: 4 drinks

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 8-12 mint leaves, plus a few more for each drink
  • 1 6oz container of blackberries (or a heaping cup)
  • light rum (I used Cruzan)
  • 4 Limes
  • 2 12 oz cans Club Soda (or seltzer)

Instructions

Notes

The mint simple syrup will last in the refrigerator for up to a week if you have leftovers.

    Happy Friday, Bri! I’m glad you got this drink right on try #3 because it looks deliciously refreshing! I’ve never had a blackberry drink before, so I love that it’s different than the standard strawberry or raspberry ones. And this is definitely perfect for Friday!

    Um, I love this! I have been waiting all week to see what you would post today after your comment! :) So funny story, I don’t really drink. I mean I am kind of a fake drinker….as in I will drink sangria, and if you see me with a glass of wine the chances are good that it is half wine half juice! ha! But I was with my husband at a mexican restaurant and ordered a mojito (I had never had one) I did not even drink half of it before I thought I was going to fall of my chair! ha! So maybe I should stick to the non alcohol version!

      That is too funny! It sounds like they made it strong. Come over and give mine a chance, or just try the spritzer version sans alcohol. So good either way!

    Happy Tuesday…. :) Not all the fun has to happen on a Friday right?! I love me a mojito, with blackberries even more… Can’t wait to try this!! Gonna have to wait until Summer to make tho, berries are freakin expensive now.
